Wheat prices surge as Russia pulls out of Black Sea grain deal

NNA - Russia has halted its participation in the Black Sea grain export deal, the Kremlin has said, sending wheat prices higher.

The deal, brokered by the United Nations and Turkey last July, aimed to alleviate a global food crisis by allowing Ukrainian grain to be safely exported amid Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

It had been extended several times, but was due to expire today. Russia had been saying for months that conditions for its extension had not been fulfilled.

The Kremlin said the deal has “de facto ended”.

It comes as Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the Crimean bridge overnight with maritime drones, killing two people.

The deal has sent wheat prices surging, with the Chicago Board of Trade most active contract up 6.7pc at $689 a bushel.--agencies
