NNA – Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Wednesday presided over a Cabinet meeting at the Grand Serail, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saadeh Shami, and several ministers, including Education Minister Abbas Halabi, Information Minister Ziad Makary, Finance Minister Youssef Khalil, and others.
In the wake of the meeting, Minister Makary briefed attendees on discussions about the ongoing refugee crisis resulting from Israeli aggression.
The Information Minister revealed that the government held meetings with UN organizations and donor country ambassadors to discuss a response plan. “Currently, around 874 shelters have been established, with increasing numbers of displaced persons, primarily non-Lebanese, seeking refuge. The government is coordinating with the UN Refugee Agency to provide adequate support, ensuring that no one remains on the streets,” Makary said.
Moreover, the Information Minister noted the urgent need for $427 million to fund shelter and relief efforts over the next three months, with initial approval for about $200 million received.
“All aid will pass through a transparent mechanism via the United Nations, with implementation coordinated with the Lebanese state,” Makary explained.
Additionally, Minister of Public Works, Ali Hamieh, addressed ongoing logistical measures, particularly concerning Rafik Hariri International Airport. He stated that the Cabinet had addressed “insurance companies that deal with Middle East Airlines,” which is crucial for maintaining flight operations amid the current crisis. “This decision pertains to coverage for Middle East Airlines, ensuring that the airline can continue its flights to and from Beirut and various international capitals,” he explained.
Hamieh further highlighted the importance of military coordination.
“Any military aircraft or operations related to the military situation will require approval from the army's command,” Hamieh said, reassuring the public that the Ministry of Public Works is actively working to expedite the clearance of goods from Lebanon’s ports, ensuring that all facilities are operational around the clock.
In turn, Caretaker Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin, detailed ongoing efforts to find additional shelter options, especially as schools in Beirut and Mount Lebanon reach capacity.
Yassin emphasized the collaboration with municipalities and international organizations to distribute aid effectively.
Furthermore, Caretaker Minister of Industry, George Boujikian, stated that the government was actively managing the crisis and urged cooperation to highlight positive developments amidst challenges.
For his part, Caretaker Minister of Economy, Amin Salam, thanked countries providing assistance and reassured that food supplies remained available, despite some misinformation regarding shipments. He also acknowledged the crucial role of Middle East Airlines in facilitating the return of citizens and foreign nationals.
