(UPDATED) Berri chairs "Development and Liberation" bloc meeting: Resistance continues to thwart Israeli expansionist, divisive projects

NNA – House Speaker, Nabih Berri, on Friday chaired a meeting by the "Development and Liberation" bloc to discuss political developments, legislative matters, and the anniversary of the July 2006 Israeli aggression.

In a statement issued following the meeting, MP Ayoub Hmayed noted that this year's anniversary coincided with ongoing Israeli aggression, particularly in southern Lebanon. "Israel has used banned weapons, targeting agricultural areas, residential neighborhoods, and civilians," Hmayed stated. "This reflects the aggressive nature of the Israeli political and military levels."

The bloc expressed admiration for the resistance fighters and martyrs, who thwarted Israel's objectives in 2006. "They continue to resist any new Israeli attempts to revive expansionist and divisive projects."

Reaffirming commitment to UN Resolution 1701, Hmayed noted Israel's violations of Lebanese sovereignty. "The bloc welcomes any international effort to compel Israel to cease its aggression against Palestinians in Gaza and Lebanon."

The bloc rejected discussions of buffer zones on Lebanese soil and called on the government to support citizens in their villages and compensate the families of martyrs.

On the presidential election, the bloc condemned attacks on presidential roles and emphasized Lebanon's unique composition as a country of dialogue. "We welcome any Arab or international efforts to assist Lebanon in electing a president," Hmayed said.

The bloc also urged the swift enactment of laws to restore depositors' rights and funds.
