Statement on the occasion of May 9, International Humanitarian Law Day 2024 in the countries of the OIC

NNA - Benghazi (UNA) – Guided by one of the humanitarian principles contained in the 1982 Islamic Committee of the International Crescent Convention, the "Principle of Human Dignity", which calls for "the Committee to ensure that human dignity, with its spiritual and moral components, is a basic requirement for betterhuman relations, deriving its solidity from the availability of elements of respect, love and goodness for all human beings."

In order to achieve this call, the thirtieth session of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent issued a recommendation to adopt a national day of international humanitarian law in the OIC countries, in commemoration of the command of (the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace), and recommended by the Caliph Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him), which was issued on 14 Safar of the year 11 AH, corresponding to the day (09 May of that year)., which was recommended by the commander of the Islamic army, Osama bin Zayd, may God be pleased with him, who was heading to fight the Romans in 634 AD.

This recommendation was submitted to the forty-second session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of Islamic Countries held in Kuwait on 27-28 May 2015, and adopted by Resolution No. 41/1 ICHAD paragraphs 20 and 21 approving the designation of  (9 May of each year) as a day of international humanitarian law at the level of the OIC countries.

In application of the commemoration of the International Humanitarian Law Day on May 9, 2024,in the OIC countries, which is witnessing the commission of serious Israeli violations of international humanitarian law, including the crime of genocide,crime against humanity, war crimes, barbaric and brutal massacres and collective punishments in the war on Gaza, committed by the colonial occupation forces in the war on Gaza and in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

In implementation of  the resolutions adopted by the conferences of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Extraordinary Joint Arab and Islamic Summit to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people held in November 2023 in Riyadh, and the fifteenth Islamic Summit held in May 2024 in Banjul – The Gambia, which called for condemning the Israeli aggression and the crimes committed in the war on Gaza;

We address a humanitarian appeal to confront the humanitarian catastrophe on the Gaza Strip and its people, due to the ongoing Israeli aggression for about seven months,to all countries of the world, the National Societies of the Red Crescent andRed Cross and regional and international humanitarian organizations, to the need to act to stop the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces against civilians, including children, women, the elderly and people with special needs in the war on Gaza, and we call for mobilizing international efforts to implement The precautionary measures, ordered by the International Court of Justice, and exerting all efforts to safely access medical and relief humanitarian aid, providing water and electricity, and opening humanitarian corridors to all parts of the Gaza Strip without obstacles.

We call on  the Red Crescent and Red Cross societies and national committees for international humanitarian law to commemorate the occasion of International Humanitarian Law Day by organizing awareness seminars in order to respect this law in all cases of its application and work to suppress its violations. (UNA)
