HIGHLIGHTS OF 2017: LIBERATION OF ARSAL OUTSKIRTS, RESIGNATION OF HARIRI, ENDORSEMENT OF ELECTION LAW, AND HISTORIC VISIT BY RAHI TO KSA

NNA - The year 2017 witnessed a series of prominent local events dominated by Prime Minister Saad Hariri's sudden resignation from Saudi Arabia. This sparked a flurry of conflicting positions, which eventually lead to Hariri's return to Lebanon. The year 2017 also witnessed a historic pastoral visit by Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi to Saudi Arabia.

What also distinguished the year 2017 is the House of Parliament's endorsement of a new electoral law in preparation for the parliamentary elections expected in May 2018, and the adoption of a general budget -- after 12 years of failing to do so -- as well as the approval of the lengthily awaited wage hike for public sector employees.

On the other hand, the Lebanese army managed to liberate Arsal outskirts, Ras Baalbek and al-Qaa from the grip of terrorists and to receive the bodies of the soldiers who were kidnapped by Daesh.

Also at the security level, 2017 unfortunately witnessed many crimes due to the uncontrolled access to illegal weapons. In addition, customs managed to seize large quantities of drugs.

At the international scene, the world, including Lebanon, was shocked by the announcement by US President Donald Trump declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Israel -- a decision that was met by Arab and international diplomatic denunciations.

News about the killing of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh by the Houthis in Yemen shook the regional scene. On the other hand, the war against Daesh in Iraq ended, and so did the Gulf-Qatari crisis.

Terrorism in 2017 hit many parts of the world through the bombing of churches and mosques, and other terrorist acts in many countries.

The National News Agency publishes hereunder the most prominent events of 2017, wishing its followers a year of peace and tranquility.
